Varanus acanthurus (Spiny-tailed monitor)

Spiny-tailed monitors are found throughout the Kimberley. Their range extends to the Pilbara and Central Australia. They inhabit rocky outcrops. The spines on the tail make them difficult for predators (and people) to remove from the rock crevices. The white ringed markings on its back and the spines on the tail are distinctive features for this monitor.
