Marsdenia viridiflora (Bush Banana)
Marsdenia viridiflora, often called by its Yawuru name Magabala, is a scambling vine that lives on a host tree. It is often called ‘ Bush Banana’ but the fruit of this plant is not yellow in colour and the skin can be eaten raw! The fruit is a popular food in the Kimberely and usually collected during the Wet season (Janaury – March). The young fruit can be eaten raw when moist and sweet or cooked in hot ashes and the seeds inside tastes a bit like young green peas.
